Nisha and the Lost Melody
A girl helps a nightingale find its lost song by believing in herself.
Nisha loved music more than anything. She hummed while brushing her teeth. She sang while walking to school. She even made up little tunes while doing her maths homework. But whenever someone asked her to sing in front of others, Nisha's voice would disappear, like a candle blown out by the wind.
One cool evening, Nisha was sitting in her grandmother's garden when she heard a strange sound โ a nightingale, sitting on the jasmine bush, trying to sing but only making little croaky noises.
"What's wrong?" asked Nisha.
"I've lost my melody," said the nightingale, her feathers drooping. "I used to sing the most beautiful song in the forest. But one day, a crow laughed at me and said my singing was too loud. Ever since then, I open my beak and nothing comes out right."
Nisha understood perfectly. Last year, during the school assembly, she had forgotten the words to a song. Some children had giggled. Since then, Nisha never sang in front of anyone.
"Maybe we can help each other," said Nisha.
They made a plan. Every evening, when the garden was quiet, Nisha and the nightingale would practise together. At first, Nisha's voice shook. The nightingale's notes wobbled. But they didn't give up.
"Let's try again," Nisha would say. And they would.
Day by day, something changed. The nightingale's notes grew clearer. Nisha's voice grew stronger. They weren't just practising music โ they were practising bravery.
One evening, Nisha's grandmother came to the garden and heard them singing together. She stood quietly, listening. When the song ended, she had tears in her eyes.
"That was the most beautiful thing I've ever heard," she said.
The nightingale looked at Nisha. Nisha looked at the nightingale. They both knew the truth: the melody had never really been lost. It had just been waiting for them to be brave enough to let it out.
That night, Nisha lay in bed listening to the nightingale singing under the stars โ a full, beautiful, joyful song. She smiled and whispered, "Goodnight, friend. We did it."
And she fell asleep to the sweetest lullaby the garden had ever known.
