Sam's New Neighbor
A shy boy finds a clever way to make friends with the new girl next door.
A moving truck came to the house next door. Sam watched from his window. A girl with curly hair and a red backpack got out of the car. She looked around at everything. She looked a little lost.
"Who's that?" asked Sam.
"Your new neighbor," said Mama. "Why don't you go say hello?"
Sam hid behind the curtain. "What if she doesn't want to be my friend?"
"What if she does?" said Mama.
Sam had an idea. He drew a picture. It was a drawing of two stick figures playing with a ball. Under it he wrote: "Hi! I'm Sam. Want to play?"
He walked over very slowly. His heart was beating fast. He put the picture on her doorstep. Then he ran back home!
A few minutes later, the doorbell rang. The curly-haired girl was standing there. She was holding his picture โ and her own drawing! It showed two stick figures on swings, and it said: "Hi Sam! I'm Lucia. Yes please!"
Sam laughed. Lucia laughed. They played in the garden all morning.
"How did you become friends so fast?" asked Papa at lunch.
"Easy!" said Sam. "I drew my feelings when I couldn't find the words."
Sometimes friendship starts with a small brave step. Or a stick figure drawing.
