The Gratitude Walk
A grumpy boy discovers that a morning walk filled with gratitude can change his entire day.
Dhruv was having a terrible morning. His favorite shirt was in the laundry. His toast was burnt. His sister ate the last banana. Everything was going wrong.
"Come," said Dadi, putting on her walking shoes. "Walk with me."
"I don't want to walk," grumbled Dhruv.
"I know," said Dadi. "That's why you need to."
They stepped outside into the early morning. The air was cool and fresh. Dadi took a deep breath. "On a gratitude walk, we find five things to be grateful for. You can't go home until you find all five."
"That's easy. I'm grateful for nothing today," said Dhruv.
Dadi just smiled and kept walking.
They passed a mango tree. Fat, ripe mangoes hung from the branches. "Do you like mangoes?" asked Dadi.
"Obviously," said Dhruv.
"That's one," said Dadi.
They passed a dog wagging its tail at them from behind a gate. Dhruv scratched its ears through the fence. The dog licked his hand. Despite himself, he laughed. "Okay, that's two."
They heard birds singing. Not just one bird โ a whole orchestra of them. Dhruv stopped and listened. "Three," he said softly.
They saw the sun coming up over the buildings, painting the clouds pink and gold. "Four," said Dhruv, eyes wide.
At the end of the street, Dadi held his hand. Her hand was warm and soft and felt like safety. "Five," whispered Dhruv.
"How do you feel now?" asked Dadi.
Dhruv thought about it. The burnt toast and the missing shirt and the eaten banana all seemed very small now. "Good," he said. "I feel really good."
"Gratitude doesn't change what happened," said Dadi. "It changes how you see everything else."
They walked home together, hand in hand. And Dhruv's terrible morning turned into one of his favorite memories.
