The Morning I Almost Gave Up

A girl struggles with her school project but discovers that perseverance pays off.

Maya had been building a solar system model for school. It was due today. She'd worked on it all week โ€” painting the planets, cutting out Saturn's rings, gluing everything to a big black poster board.

But when she came downstairs that morning, the whole thing was on the kitchen floor. In pieces. The cat had knocked it off the table during the night.

"No, no, no!" Maya cried. Jupiter was cracked. Saturn's rings were bent. Mars had rolled under the fridge.

She sat on the floor and wanted to cry. "I can't fix this. There's no time. I should just tell my teacher I couldn't do it."

Appa sat down beside her. "Maya, look at what you built over a whole week. Do you think the person who made this is someone who gives up?"

Maya sniffled. "But it's broken."

"Broken doesn't mean done," said Appa. "It means we fix it. And we fix it together."

They worked fast. Appa held the pieces while Maya glued. Didi helped repaint Jupiter. Even the cat seemed sorry โ€” she sat very still and watched.

Forty minutes later, the solar system was back together. It wasn't perfect. The rings were a little wobbly, and Jupiter had a visible crack line. But it was finished.

At school, Maya's teacher looked at the model. "I love how Saturn's rings have that natural curve," she said. "And what's this line on Jupiter?"

"That's the Great Red Spot," Maya said quickly. Everyone laughed.

She got an A. Not because it was perfect, but because she didn't give up.

That night, Maya taped a note to her mirror: "Broken doesn't mean done." She reads it every morning. And every morning, she believes it a little more.

โœจ What We Learned

  • โญWhen things go wrong, we can choose to fix them instead of giving up
  • โญAsking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness
  • โญImperfect things made with effort are more valuable than giving up on perfection
