The Truth About the Broken Vase
A girl must choose between hiding a mistake and telling the truth.
Noor was practicing her dance moves in the living room before school. Spin, spin, twirl โ CRASH! Her elbow hit the blue vase on the shelf. It fell and broke into five pieces on the floor.
Noor stared at the broken vase. Her heart pounded. That was Mama's favorite vase. Teta had given it to her before she moved far away.
Noor's first thought was: "I'll hide the pieces. I'll say the cat did it. Nobody saw."
She even got a plastic bag and started picking up the pieces. But her hands were shaking. And her stomach felt like it was full of rocks.
She stopped. She put the bag down. She went to find Mama.
"Mama," said Noor, her voice wobbling. "I broke your blue vase. I was dancing and my elbow hit it. I'm really, really sorry."
Mama's face went through three expressions. Surprise. Sadness. Then something else โ something warm.
"Thank you for telling me the truth, Noor."
"You're not angry?"
"I'm sad about the vase," said Mama honestly. "But I'm proud of you. Do you know how much courage it takes to tell the truth when you could have hidden it?"
Noor's rock-stomach started to feel lighter.
Together, they picked up the five pieces. Mama got special glue, and they fixed the vase together. You could see the crack lines, but Mama put it right back on the shelf.
"Why not throw it away?" asked Noor. "It's broken."
"Because," said Mama, "now it has a story. And the story is about a brave girl who chose honesty over hiding. Every time I look at it, I'll remember that."
Noor looked at the vase with its golden crack lines. It was different now. But maybe different was beautiful too.
She walked to school that morning feeling ten pounds lighter. The truth hadn't been easy. But it set her free.
